The Monster Spelling Piano app

The Monster Spelling Piano app for tablets (£14.99 one-time price) now includes a section specifically designed to learn 100 high-frequency words into the orthographic lexicon (the brain’s word bank) for instant recognition and accurate retrieval when writing.

Speech, spelling and meaning are bonded as the user listens to the word and first plays it using speech sounds with the Phonemies (Speech Sound Monsters®), then sees the corresponding graphemes. The phonemes, graphemes and meaning are made explicit. If a child has strong phonemic awareness, this is often enough for the word to be stored.

If not, for example where there is a risk of dyslexia, the word can be built using the Spelling Routine with the Monster Spelling Mat. If you are new to this approach, start with the 2-hour training course at SpeechSoundMapping.com.

Although the Monster Spelling Piano app 'Sight Word' feature is shown here the primary use of the app for tablets is to enable children to develop phonemic awareness and learn The Core Code before the end of Reception.

During the Speech Sound Play Plan, toggle to the Speech Sound Monsters® (Phonemies®) so that the focus is on strengthening phonemic awareness and phonological working memory. Children still see the Sound Pics® (graphemes), whether Phonemies® are toggled on or off. Phonemies® are IPA phonetic symbols for kids.
It is being used here by a non-speaking autistic child.
Non-Speaking children use MySpeekie® as a one-screen AAC that also guides self-teaching of reading and spelling. It is also used as part of Spelling Simplified, along with the 60 Second Spelling Routine that is the focus of this Spelling Routine web site!
