Orthographic Learners need to be SHOWN the mapping they will store. Show the code at the time of need. The 60-Second Spelling Routine helps store it, and you let them get on with self-teaching.
Our goal is for explicit instruction to be finished before Grade 1, with every child self-teaching. If you spend ages explicitly teaching rules, you can slow things down for the kids who are ready to fly. The rule only works neatly on a worksheet containing words that follow that pattern. In real life, they’re navigating the rest of the code.You can’t explicitly teach the whole code, or every word, and time is precious. So the trick is to give each child what they need to start self-teaching. That’s only a few GPCs, e.g. those on the outside of the Spelling Clouds here.
These Spelling Clouds were developed in Australia by SSP children exploring the code. We found that they enjoyed being code explorers far more than being told about all the spelling choices for every phoneme!
